Acronym:3S4Leather
Title: 3S4Leather– Sustainable and Sensor-Based Solutions Using Leather Waste Through Additive Manufacturing
Start Date:January 1, 2025
Completion Date:12/31/2027
Technology Area:Materials
Industry:Tannery
Abstract
The 3S4Leather project focuses on the development of sustainable, sensor-based solutions made from leather waste using additive manufacturing (AM), and is based on two main objectives: the recovery of leather waste from the tanning industry and the development of new sustainable and sensor-based solutions for the footwear industry, made from leather waste and produced via additive manufacturing. To this end, new formulations will be developed tailored to two additive technologies: Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) and Selective Laser Sintering.
SMART Objectives:
– Valorization of waste from the tanning industry through the incorporation of more than 20% w/w of tanned solid leather waste into formulations for additive manufacturing;
-Development of a range of customized and/or detailed leather products for the footwear industry through the direct deposition of Leather Polymer Composite filaments onto non-planar leather substrates;
-Preparation of a set of leather waste-based formulations compatible with the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) process;
– Development of a range of lasts for the footwear industry produced via SLS;
– Incorporation of sensor systems into two product lines for the footwear industry based on leather waste produced by additive manufacturing
